A Message from the NBS President 4-17-2013

From the Desk of the NBS President

[For Immediate Release]

April 17, 2013

It was with heartfelt empathy to learn of the tragic bombing that occurred at the Boston
Marathon, and even more deeply to recently learn that one of our NBS family members was
a victim from the senseless act that took place in the city of Boston, MA. While watching the
Boston Marathon with his family, eight year old Martin Richard was tragically killed in the
incident. Martin was a member of the Boston Ski Party’s partnership with Youth Enrichment
Services (YES) and the club’s ski team.

On behalf of the National Brotherhood of Skiers, I express deepest sympathy to the family of
Martin Richard, and extend condolences and prayers to the Richard family for the loss of their
son and brother. We remain hopeful and prayerful on the recovery of Martin’s mother and sister
as they deal with the significant injuries they suffered from the bombing incident.

A Message From Our President

I am pleased to provide this message as the president of the National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc. [NBS]. While it seems as if a huge amount of time has elapsed since the national elections and the posting of this communication, please know that I have been diligently at work speaking with various individuals that will help the Board of directors, other volunteers, and organizational engagers with the journey that precedes and will continue beyond many of us, and those one-on-one and small group conversations are continuing.

For those with whom I have spoken, we have only scratched the surface, and we will have chances to continue the conversation. For those who I have yet to connect with, I look forward to checking in with you as we explore the opportunities to further maximize the organizational effectiveness and operations of the NBS.

There is more to come in the days ahead! If you have not already provided your e-mail address on the national website, or if you have not connected with the organization on Facebook or Twitter, please do so as more frequent communication will occur through some of those channels.

Club presidents expressed a vote of confidence by electing me as NBS president and for that I am very grateful. My enthusiasm for the mission of the organization reaches back to my very first Annual Meeting / Challenge Cup [Mini-Summit] at Lake Tahoe in 1984. It was the coming together of club members and other interested stakeholders for a week of skiing, racing, and socializing all for the purpose of supporting the national youth racers that inspired me to get involved; and involvement was what I did. From youth director at the club level to regional youth director, from financial secretary to regional treasurer, from regional director to regional vice president, and now to NBS President; the path had several points of new learning and experiences, but all were with purpose!

I am now honored to serve as the NBS President, and I look forward to a memorable 40th year anniversary Summit in Snowmass, Colorado! Whether you are a skier, boarder or a winter sports enthusiast, I extend my thanks and appreciation for your continued support, involvement and participation in the National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc.

The work continues, the dream continues, and I sincerely hope your positive involvement and participation continues in helping the NBS remain the largest ski organization in the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Diana C. Starks
NBS President
