Bryce Welch – Halfpipe Rider Going for the GOLD

Bryce is an athlete on the 2022-2023 NBS Competition Team and a youth BOSS member of the Eastern Region Sugar & Spice Snow & Social Club.

Bryce is an honor student at George Washington University Online High School in Washington, DC. While not in school and studying, he spends 6 days a week training as a Halfpipe Snowboarder under the direction of Jim Smith.

Bryce was raised in Annapolis, Maryland by a single mom. She did her best to allow him to experience everything from white water rafting to drag racing but, the one thing he stuck with over the years was snowboarding. She first asked him if he wanted to try snowboarding at five-year-old. Without knowing it, his answer changed the trajectory of his life. Out of the eleven seasons he has been snowboarding, eight of them have been spent on the east coast. For the most part, he was a self-taught rider who knew the basics and had only ridden on small local mountains. After riding with friends, he decided that park riding was something he wanted to get better at. At the age of nine, Richard Ward invited them to a racing camp in Killington, Vermont. Riding one day at Killington made him develop a deeper love for the sport and that’s when he knew he wanted to start pushing the limits. After a few seasons of local riding, Richard assisted with getting him a scholarship and providing additional funding for him to attend Killington Mountain School (KMS) for the winter session. At the end of that season, he and his mom took a trip to Vail, Colorado (during USASA Nationals) and he didn’t want to leave. That summer, he and his mom dropped everything, moved, and put her entire life on hold, just so he could train in Colorado. That same year, he became one of Never Summer’s youth riders. During the 2021-2022 season, he decided to really dedicate himself and choose to exclusively ride halfpipe. This past season, he received his first Rev Tour invite and appeared in Warren Millers “Daymaker”. His dream is to one day be at the top of the Olympic podium and give back to up-and-coming athletes.

Here are Bryce’s top three sanctioned competition results for this past season:
4th at the Future, 14th at Revolution Tour, 16th at Revolution Tour.

Bryce also competed in the USASA Halfpipe Nationals on April 5, 2022, and placed 6th. During his off season, he spent his summer at
Mount Hood for halfpipe and strength training under the direction of Chris Hargrave.

Bryce has three goals for the 2022-2023 season:

  • Making the finals at a Futures Tour
  • Making top 10 at a Rev Tour
  • Podiuming at USASA Nationals
